Celebration in Person!

It's nice to be singing and celebrating together again, IN PERSON! Alberta Gold returned to in-person rehearsals on October 25, 2021, fully masked and fully vaxxed. It hasn't been without challenges - the masks are warm, the sound is muffled and sometimes it can be difficult to hear - but the joy of singing together is evident each time we come together. On December 13, we enjoyed a holiday celebration with singing, laughing and lots of silliness. We were also pleased to participate in our first casino fundraiser since pre-COVID in December, as well as some sweet fund-raising with Purdys chocolates. We are looking forward to a busy 2022, with an intention to send in a competition video for regional competition, and lots of singing and coaching along the way.

Special guests - No Strings

No Strings, our current regional quartet champion, was with us on May 17 to teach us about the special characteristics of each section in a barbershop chorus, and how we can best sing our parts. They shared their wisdom and their wit, and the evening was enjoyed by all. No Strings has a special place in Alberta Gold's heart and we were very glad to see them on Monday, and look forward to hearing them sing again in person!

Unmuted in 2021!

What a weekend! Region 26 of Sweet Adelines International held its first ever virtual convention this past weekend. While nothing can compare to the feeling of being in person and singing on stage, this weekend sure had something for everyone and did not disappoint. Thursday evening we recognized those who contribute above and beyond around our region, Friday was quartet day, with virtual presentations by our region's quartets, and Saturday was chorus day, where choruses entertained with their virtual offerings. Alberta Gold was pleased to debut our new virtual song Dancing Queen. We hope you enjoy! Thanks to those who organized a fabulous virtual event - Region 26 is going strong!

More education!

Kim Vaughn joined us at rehearsal on April 12 to teach us about proper vowel matching. Kim is a Sweet Adelines rock star - Master 700 Director, International Chorus Champion director, 3-time Quartet Champion, sound judge, vocal coach, recipient of the 2014 President's Lifetime Achievement award ... the list goes on and on. Adding to those credentials, Kim is a really fun person and we enjoyed her knowledge, experience and stories! We hope to have her visit again and one day spend some time with her in person.

Mo and Amelia - Beatles-a-Day

Alberta Gold was delighted to welcome Mo and Amelia, who brought their Beatles-a-Day show on the road for a recent rehearsal. Barbershoppers looking for something to do at the beginning of the pandemic, Mo and Amelia decided to do a daily Beatles show on Facebook - over one year later they are still going strong and have not yet missed a day! It was a fun evening of sing along, "bits of tid" (Beatles trivia), a quiz and a lot of laughs. They even sang a Beatles birthday wish to one of our members who was celebrating her birthday that day!  You can check them out at https://www.facebook.com/beatlesaday.

Learning to practice at home!

Lisa Hills, from Westcoast Harmony Chorus and VITA quartet recently joined us with a presentation on practicing at home. She had lots of tips and tricks, right from motivating yourself to practice, to scheduling and making time for practice, to actual practice time and self coaching. Practicing at home is something many singers have struggled with during the pandemic, without the motivation of a weekly in-person rehearsal. Special projects make it easier, but Lisa gave us real ideas to put into practice.
